Tibet 1800 - 1899 Sakya, Ngor (Sakya) and Buddhist Lineages Collection of Field Museum of Natural History
Jamyang Sherab Gyatso Tashi Dragpa'i Gyaltsen (19th century): of the Kangsar Labrang, the 56th Abbot of Ngor Ewam Monastery. He wears the robes of a fully ordained monk and the typical Sakya style hat with the lappets turned up and folded over the crown. The flower blossom on the proper right supports a sword and book and the blossom on the left a vajra and bell. In the lap is a long life vase often indicating that the person depicted was still living at the time of the commission of the painting. Jamyang Sherab Gyatso was also the nephew of the 48th Abbot Ngagwang Lodro Zangpo. (See Sakya Hats Outline).
At the viewer's lower left is the 53rd Abbot of Ngor Ewam Monastery Kunga Tanpa'i Lodro (1822-1884) of the Pende Labrang holding in the right hand the stem of a flower blossom supporting a sword and book. In the left he holds both the stem of a flower supporting a vajra and bell and a long life vase in the lap.
At the lower right is Nangtse Ritrupa, Kunga Chokyi Wangpo (19th century), wearing a pandita style hat with a pronounced point at the top. The right hand holds the stem of a flower blossom supporting a sword and book and a long life vase rests in the lap held with a white scarf in the left hand. He was known as a great retreat practitioner from the Kham region of Tibet.
The three figures have accompanying name inscriptions written on the tables directly in front. |
